The company
Ambiance Outdoor Lighting designs and installs landscape, low-voltage, permanent and holiday lighting for homes across Houston and the surrounding communities. We are locally owned and operated, and Elwin Brown, the owner, is on every job.
That is not a slogan about customer service, it is how the work gets done. Lighting design is a judgement made on site in the dark — where this beam lands, how wide it spreads, whether that tree wants two fixtures or three. It cannot be delegated to a price list, and it cannot be done from a floor plan at nine in the morning.
So we quote at night, install to that plan, and come back at night to aim it. Customers routinely tell us the return visit is the part nobody else offered.
Meet the owner
Elwin Brown
Elwin Brown owns Ambiance Outdoor Lighting and is the lighting designer on every project the company takes. He does the first walk of the property, runs the after-dark demo with fixtures in hand, writes the proposal, works alongside the crew during installation, and comes back at night once the system is live to aim every beam himself.
Read through the Google reviews and the same things come up repeatedly, which is the most honest description of how he works: he turns up when he says he will, he does what he said he would do, and he is on site rather than sending someone. Several reviewers describe watching the whole installation. One describes him consolidating a system that had been running off three separate transformer boxes down onto one. Another describes him rewiring and reworking an existing installation rather than selling a replacement.
That last point is worth drawing out, because it is where a lot of the expertise actually sits. A large share of the work here is restoring systems other companies installed — diagnosing why the far end of a run is dim, finding the corroded splice buried under two seasons of mulch, working out whether a transformer was undersized from day one. You learn more about what makes lighting last from pulling apart failures than from installing new work, and it is why the guides on this site are blunt about which materials survive a Houston summer and which do not.

Standards
What we will not do
There are a few shortcuts common in this trade that we do not take, and they are the reason our systems are still working when we come back years later.
- Stamped aluminium fixtures. They corrode through in Gulf Coast humidity. We install solid cast brass with a lifetime warranty.
- Cable laid on the surface. Every run is trenched and every connection sealed. Nothing for a mower to find.
- Undersized transformers. We specify headroom so you can add fixtures later without replacing the box.
- Install and disappear. We return after dark to aim the system once it is live, and offer annual maintenance after that.
Process
How we work
Night demo
We come out after dark with fixtures in hand and light the house in front of you. You see the actual design before anything is bought.
Fixed quote
A written plan with fixture counts, placements and one price. No hourly surprises, no change orders once the number is agreed.
Clean install
Most residential systems go in within a day. Wire is trenched, transformers mounted discreetly, beds and turf left as we found them.
Aim & aftercare
We return at night to fine-tune every beam once the system is live — then optional maintenance keeps it aimed and lamped year-round.

Who will actually turn up at my house?
Elwin Brown, the owner. He runs the design visit and the after-dark demo himself, works alongside the crew during installation, and returns at night to aim the system. You are not handed from a salesperson to an install team you have never met.
Are you a franchise?
No. Ambiance Outdoor Lighting is locally owned and operated out of Houston. There is no national call centre, no territory manager and no corporate price book — which is also why the design can be changed on the spot during the demo.
Do you subcontract the installation?
No. The work is done by this crew with the owner on site. The only exception is the rare case where a property has no suitable exterior outlet and a licensed electrician is needed to add one; that is flagged in the proposal rather than sprung on you on the day.

Do you only work on new installations?
Not at all. A large share of the work is repairing and restoring existing systems, including ones installed by other companies. In many cases that is far cheaper than replacement, and we will say so rather than quoting you a new system. See repair and restoration.
Which areas do you cover?
Houston and the surrounding communities within roughly an hour, including Sugar Land, Missouri City, Richmond, Katy, Cypress, Spring, Memorial, River Oaks, The Woodlands, Bellaire, West University Place, Pearland and Fulshear. The service areas page has the full list, and there is no travel surcharge within it.
What happens if something stops working after install?
Call and we come back. Fixture bodies carry a lifetime manufacturer warranty, LED lamps carry their own term, and our installation work is warranted for the period written into your proposal. Optional annual maintenance keeps the system aimed and lamped, but skipping it does not void anything.
